Concept
This program is intentionally designed as a student-centered learning environment that fosters engagement, cross-level interaction, and meaningful participation. The goal is not only language development, but the creation of a sustained learning community in which students remain connected and contribute to the program.
Program Architecture
The program is structured to support progression across courses while maintaining connections beyond individual classes.
Entry Points
Students enter the program through multiple pathways, including high school study, transfer credit, prior immersion experience, or no prior exposure to Japanese. This flexible structure allows learners with diverse backgrounds to join the program at appropriate levels.
Course Sequence
The program includes a sequence of courses from elementary to advanced levels. While the sequence provides structure, it is designed to support flexibility and continued connection beyond individual courses.
Shared Learning Environment
At the center of the program is the Japanese Cultural Hub, a shared space for cross-level interaction and learning. In this environment, students from different levels connect through conversation, community activities, cultural events, and tutoring. This shared space extends learning beyond the classroom and supports sustained engagement across the program.
Corss-Level Connection
A key feature of the program is the integration of cross-level interaction. Students do not learn in isolation within individual courses, but engage with peers across different levels through shared spaces and activities.
1-Credit Courses
1-credit courses function as spaces for cross-level connection. These courses bring together students from different levels around shared topics, creating additional opportunities for interaction beyond the core sequence.
Students as Contributors
Students are positioned not only as learners, but as contributors to the program. Through projects, content creation, peer support, and leadership roles, students actively participate in shaping the learning environment.
Study Abroad
Study abroad opportunities extend learning beyond the program. Faculty-led programs and exchange experiences in Japan provide students with opportunities to deepen their language ability and develop global perspectives.
